House of Representatives Expresses Support for Democracy and Human Rights in Pakistan

November 30, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C., November 29, 2023 – Congressman Rich McCormick and Congressman Dan Kildee today filed a resolution in support for Democracy and Human Rights in Pakistan. This statement comes in the wake of various challenges faced by Pakistan, including the catastrophic monsoon in 2022 and concerns raised by the Department of State's 2022 Country Report on Human Rights Practices.

"Pakistan's commitment to human rights and democracy is integral not only for its own people but also for its role as a valued partner on the global stage," said Congressman Rich McCormick. "The United States stands firmly with the citizens of Pakistan in their pursuit of democratic freedoms and human rights. Upholding these values is essential for any nation committed to the well-being and prosperity of its people."

“The people of Pakistan deserve to have their voices heard through free and fair elections. The U.S. Congress and the American people stand with the people of Pakistan to ensure democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. I am proud to work with Congressman McCormick on this important bipartisan resolution,” said Congressman Dan Kildee.

The congressmen both expressed deep concern over recent reports of excessive force used by the Pakistani police during protests, leading to loss of life and numerous detentions. They emphasized that such actions are contrary to the principles of democracy and human rights that Pakistan has historically supported.

Considering the recent political upheavals in Pakistan, including the dissolution of the National Assembly and the postponement of elections, the congressmen called for adherence to Pakistan's constitutional mandate that elections should be held within ninety days following the dissolution of the Assembly. They urged the Government of Pakistan to respect and uphold democratic institutions, the rule of law, and conduct free and fair elections reflective of the people's will.

This resolution, if passed, would be an extremely strong statement from the House of Representatives to affirm strong support for democracy in Pakistan. It calls on the President and the Secretary of State to engage with the Government of Pakistan in supporting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The Congressmen condemned any attempts to suppress the Pakistani people's participation in their democracy, including harassment, intimidation, and arbitrary detention, as well as efforts to undermine political, electoral, or judicial processes.
